Do We Actually?
On social media, we find hundreds of articles about how we should accept our individuality and stop comparing our worth with others. And how we should stop chasing what others have and start pursuing our own ambitions!
Then either we scroll away or turn off the phone, getting motivated for only a few seconds.
We return to our daily lives to compete with our co-worker for a promotion, earn better grades than our classmates, or even have the same number of subscribers on YouTube as our friend has.
But these words in actual life hold immense value!
Just think about it.
You try to compete with the guy next to you to have a better car than him and to have a job like his. To go on a vacation like him twice a year, and even have a beautiful girlfriend like he has, if luck would have it. Some of us even want all the exact things he has!
It’s natural; even I do it. That is why I am writing about it here.
But do you ever win that competition? Forget about winning; do you even know how to start?
No! Why?
Because he is him and you are you. All of these again take us back to the ‘All of us have different journeys’ dilemma. But there is another way to look at it.
Our experiences in life shape our journeys, and those same experiences determine our destination or goal.
When you start to compete with that person for those things, sometime later you realize you don’t want them anymore. Because his experience makes the things he has achieved special to him, but your experience is fundamentally different, so your wants will, of course, be different.
And that is the key!
No matter how many motivational videos you watch or quotes you memorize, it’s not going to help.
We simply can’t stop being content with ourselves or our goals because they are not tangible; they are still only in our heads. They are, in short, illusions!
But a friend’s car or a cousin’s PS5 are tangible things. You can look at them and, who knows, even touch them and use them. So it’s easier to fight for them.
So I say do it! Fight for them. Soon enough, you will realize it’s not worth it. Not everything others have is worth having.
You have your own wants, and no matter how hard or big they are, these are the things that will make you happy. But you won’t realize the true worth of them unless you start the fight, even for the wrong reasons.
And ironically, that wrong reason will bring you back to your own track.
Yes, it will take time. You might even feel you have wasted a lot of precious time and effort.
But hey, who is clocking you? This is your journey, remember!
Thank you for staying until the end!
