Dance of the Dragons: Top Dragon Fights Ranked-

Targaryen civil war is known as ‘Dance of the Dragons’. Where almost 17 out of 20 fully grown dragons fought to their death.

HBO hit series House of the Dragon is currently airing on every Sunday at 9pm (ET/PT). It has already relased 3 powerful episodes, and each of the episodes are looking epic. From costume to set design to acting everything seem top notch, but one thing is missing, Dragons. Don’t get me wrong since the first episode we got to see one or two dragons every now and then. But what made the book ‘Fire and Blood’ popular was the dragons, fighting one another. Where both sides, greens and blacks fight, not only with their swords or armies but with their Dragons.

Now if we go behind the scenes, it has been speculated this series will have four seasons in total. So it is apparent that we won’t get to see all the dragon fights in the second season. But who would wait for another 2 years to see the next Dragon fight.

So in this post I have ranked all the Dragons battles that is gonna take place or have already taken place during the Dance of the Dragons. I should warn you that some information here might upset you because of lots of character death is involved, one of them maybe your favourite chracter. But if you are like me, who want to know more about this thrilling war keep reading…..

Dance of the Dragons battles:

5. Battle of Storm’s End

Battle of Storm's End

I hope you all have seen this battle, it is not so much of a battle but more of a chase and then a massacre. It is the only dragon fight that has been adapted till today. This fight happened between Lucerys Velaryon and his dragon Arrax vs. Aemond Targaryen and his dragon Vhagar. Now a lot of people has differnet opinion about this fight. Some say both riders lost control of their dragons. While others say Aemond did it on purpose to avenge his lost eye etc. Anyways Aemond Targaryen and Vhager were a clear winner of this battle, while Lucerys Velaryon and his dragon ended up in Vhagar’s belly.

4. Battle of Dragon Stone

Fall of Dragonstone

Not much is known to me about this battle. This battle occured when Aegon ll invaded Dragonstone, and Baela and her dragon Moondancer fought against Sunfyre and Aegon ll. During the dawn two dragons started fighting above the dragonstone castle and eventually both fall onto the ground. Which resulted in the death of Moondancer but Baela, Aegon ll and Sunfyre survives with fatal injuries.

3. First & Second Battle of Tumbleton

First and Second battle of Tumbleton

You guys haven’t met the riders of this battle yet, but their names were Ulf White, Hugh Hammer, Prince Daeron (Aegon ii, helena and aaemond’s younger brother) and Addam of Hull. And they rode Silverwing ( Ulf White), Vermithor (Hugh Hammer), Tessarion (Prince Daeron) and Seasmoke (Addam of Hull).

While most of these dragons nor their riders were properly introduced in the show, we got to see Seasmoke in season 1 episode 3 of house of the dragon and Vermithor in the episdoe 10. In this books this characters their back stories and how they died are not clearly mentioned. Which is understandble given they were minor characters just needed for the progress of the story. Hope we will get to know them in detail in the upcoming seasons of House of the Dragons. Because both the battles occured at the very last days of the civil war at 130 AC.

2. The Battle at Rook’s Rest

Battle of Rook's Rest

This is one of the two best dragon fights according to me. In this battle Rhaenys and her dragon Meleys were ambushed by Aegon ll and his brother Aemond along with their dragons Sunfyre and Vhagar at Rook’s Rest castle. Which quickly turned into a dragon fight, Meleys was holding her own against Sunfyre. But when Vhagar joined the battle that resulted in Meleys and Rhaenys dead, and Sunfyre badly injured while Aegon ll barely survived with broken bones and third degree burns. Interestingly Vhagar and Aemond were completly fine. Meleys fall onto the ground causing her body to ripped into pieces and close to her was a burned corpse, everyone assumed that was Rhaenys’s body.

1. The Battle Above the God’s Eye

Battle above the God's Eye

This is the another best drgon fight. Mostly because two of our well known characters Daemon and Aemond participated in this battle along with their dragons Caraxes and Vhager. Now why its called the Above the God’s Eye? God’s Eye is an immense lake, the largest inland body of water in Westeros. It is located in the heart of the continent, in the southeast of the Riverlands. The ill-omened castle of Harrenhal, located on the north shore.

Also it is the only battle where no one survives, both the dragons and their riders die in this battle. But Daemon fans will be happy to know that before death Daemon kills Aemond by putting his sword through Aemond’s remaining eye while Caraxes kills Vhagar by ripping out his throat. But unfortunately soon after their foe’s death the victors take their last breath too. Though I might include while three bodies were found (Aemond, Vhager and Caraxes) in the God’s Eye lake, Daemon’s body was never found.

Conclusion:

I would like to apologize for the images that I have uploaded. Because this fights haven’t been telecasted yet, so there is a clear shortage of pictures. Also ‘Fire and Blood’ is a novel so I could not retrieve any good pictures from there too. So this was all the dragon fights that occured during the Dance of the Dragons. There are also other war seqeunces but dragons weren’t involved in there. If you want to know about them, please inform me through the comments or you can contact me using this link.

At last, let me summerize how each of the dragons die:

  1. Syrax and Dreamfyre were killed by the people of King’s Landing
  2. Caraxes and Vhager die during the battle above God’s Eye
  3. Meleys dies at Rook’s Rest
  4. Sunfyre dies of wounds from battle with Moondancer (He was gravely injured even before because of his fight with Meleys)
  5. Seasmoke, Vermithor and Tessarion dies during the 2nd battle of Tumbleton
  6. Moondancer dies while fighting Sunfyre
  7. Arrax was eaten by Vhager, while Vermax ( Jacaerys Velaryon’s dragon) dies by getting shot with scorpion bolts.

Other dragons like the Cannibal and Grey Ghost never accepted a rider, after the Dance Grey Ghost dies and the Cannibal along with Sheepsteeler leave Westeros. Only 1 dragon remain alive and in Westeros after the War, it was Silverwing.
