We have seen in many movies the main protagonist learns a lot of things from watching movies. And this is not an unbelievable thing. Even we in real life can learn a lot from movies.
Some say that movies are for entertainment and nothing more, but I disagree. I think movies can break or make someone. This not only applies to a movie lover but any ordinary person.
If a movie’s story or characters can pierce through a person’s conscious reasoning, it will definitely have an impact on them, regardless if that person is a regular movie watcher or not.
How?
Because movies are written by people. People similar to us. The concept of the movie’s story came from that person’s head or heart. In other words, that person is narrating their life or parts and events of their life to us.
It’s like when a person shares their life experience with you, and you listen and sometimes learn. Movies are doing the same thing, just in an indirect way. But we fail to learn from it most of the time.
I always believe characters in a movie are fictional only by name, but their behavior is very much real. And if you observe carefully, you can learn a lot, like I did.
So how can it be not relatable?
I have spent most of my teenage years at home. Never hung out with friends, and avoided attending parties or any social activities as much as possible. In short, my exposure to social norms was very low.
And when I did go outside to socialize, did I fail?
Nope.
Because I learned all the ways, how to handle people, start, continue and end a conversation, and mannerisms when with strangers from movies. What my friends and family learned from spending a lot of time with others, I learned it by watching movies.
And I never once called out for it.
In fact, some people who interacted with me said I have great social skills, I am a great conversationalist and sometimes even funny.
Mine was a little extreme so I won’t recommend it to anyone. But it definitely proves we can learn and adapt from movies. And it is not impractical.
I have seen my close ones getting hurt a lot because they knew less about the harsh truth of the world and its people, despite spending most of their time in it. They were gullible and got duped.
While they were socializing, I was spending most of my time in movies, watching, understanding and learning from them. I was able to avoid those same hurts and problems in my life because I had already seen them in movies. So when I saw the signs, I took precautions.
So next time when you watch a movie, try to learn from it!
Thank you for staying until the end!
