Do you know that winter nights can slow down the time for you?

At least it does for me.

Here I am, lying on my bed, and everything is so quiet and dark. While I can explain the dark because I don’t use light when I sleep, but the quiet is hard for me to explain.

During other seasons, I use a fan so the sound of that keeps my mind diverted.

But during winter night there is no fan, so it’s like my senses have heightened, especially my hearing.

I can hear the clock ticking every second, that one drop of water when falling onto the bathroom floor from the tap, and suddenly a bike horn from afar.

10 years ago these things used to annoy me a lot but these days I quite enjoy this silent moment.

Helps me reflect on my past.

More or less every night I play past events in my head before I go to sleep. And believe me or not those plays give me ideas to write about.

But on winter nights because everything is so quiet it feels like I can play all those events in slow motion. Carefully observe each character in a particular moment, and evaluate the actions that I performed in that moment.

It helps me deeply understand myself.

And somehow calms me down because I am always on the go. Feeling like I am missing so many opportunities, others are going ahead of me while I am stuck, and there is so much to do, etc.

So next time you are feeling uncomfortable in silence take that time to retrospect. It does not necessarily have to be winter night but in any silent moment.

Thank you for staying until the end!
